Dr. Danelle LarsonCo-Faculty AdvisorDanelle Larson is an Associate Professor of Music Education and Director of the Music Education Division at Eastern Illinois University. Her responsibilities include teaching courses in music education and supervising student teachers. Prior to her appointment at Eastern Illinois University, she earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in music education from Arizona State University. Her dissertation research focused on the use of chamber music experience in high school band curricula. Dr. Larson holds a Master’s degree in music education from Arizona State University and a Bachelor of Science in music education degree with an emphasis in flute performance from the University of Illinois.
Dr. Larson has ten years of teaching experience in public school music programs and has taught concert band, chamber ensembles, marching band, jazz band, orchestra, and K-8 general music. She taught music in public schools in Iowa, New Hampshire, and Georgia, and was a guest conductor with the Duluth (Georgia) High School Chamber Orchestra at the 2007 Mid-West Band and Orchestra Clinic in Chicago. Her research interests include the use of chamber music in instrumental music curricula, student autonomy in learning, feedback models for pre-service music teachers, 19th and 20th century female bands, and gender research in music education. |
Dr. Liza MeyersCo-Faculty AdvisorDr. Liza Meyers is currently Assistant Professor of Music Education at Eastern Illinois University, specializing in vocal/general music education and world music. She teaches undergraduate and masters courses, advises students, and supervises student teachers. Prior to her appointment at EIU, she served as Visiting Assistant Professor at Miami University in Ohio and taught as an adjunct instructor at Adelphi University in New York. She holds a Doctor of Musical Arts and a Master of Music in Music Education from Arizona State University, and a Bachelor of Music from Capital University Conservatory of Music.
Dr. Meyers, who previously studied at the Kodály Institute in Kecskemét, Hungary, holds both Kodály and Orff certifications and has taught musicianship and pedagogy since 2004 in graduate-level Kodály certification courses in AZ, KY, AL, AR, and MO. Through a Japan Fulbright Scholarship, she also studied music, education, and culture in Tokyo and Shiogama, Japan, spending time in local schools there. With 17 years of teaching experience, Dr. Meyers has worked with babies and preschool music classes, general music, choir, and music technology students in OH, AZ and NY. She has taught in rural, suburban, and urban settings, most recently in a charter school in the Lower East side of Manhattan. She enjoys national prominence as a clinician and pedagogue frequently presenting workshops and in-services for school districts and professional organizations on topics such sight-singing in a choral setting, world music, creative movement, Kodály and Orff in the music classroom, and arts integration. Dr. Meyers’ areas of research interest include pre-service music teacher professional development and gender in music education topics. She has presented findings from her research at conferences including the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), the Society for Music Teacher Education (SMTE), and the Mountain Lake Colloquium for Teachers of General Music Methods. |
